Subtleties of facial expressions in embodied agents

چکیده
Our goal is to develop a Believable Embodied Agent able to dialog with a user, but we aim at making an Agent that can also combine facial expressions in a complex and subtle way, just like a Human Agent does. We first review a taxonomy of communicative functions that our Agent is able to express non-verbally; but we point out that, due to the complexity of communication, in some cases different information can be provided at once by different parts and actions of an Agent’s face. In this paper we are interested in assessing and managing what happens, at the meaning and signal levels of multimodal communicative behavior, when different communicative functions have to be displayed at the same time and necessarily have to make use of the same expressive resources. Since in some of these cases the complexity of the Agent’s communication can give rise to conflicts between the parts or movements of the face, in this paper we confront this problem: we propose a way to manage the possible conflicts between different modalities of communication through the tool of Belief Networks, and we show how this tool allows us to combine facial expressions of different communicative functions and to display complex and subtle expressions.

Fuzzy Similarity of Facial Expressions of Embodied Agents
In this paper we propose an algorithm based on fuzzy similarity which models the concept of resemblance between facial expressions of an Embodied Conversational Agent (ECA). The algorithm measures the degree of visual resemblance between any two facial expressions. We also present an evaluation study in which we compared the users’ perception of similarity of facial expressions. Finally we desc...
متن کاملScripting Facial Expressions for X3D/VRML-based Embodied Agents
This paper proposes a scripting approach to facial animations for embodied agents, in particular for X3D/VRML-based web agents. The use of a scripting technology to control facial expressions has the advantage that it results in highly flexible components; not only can scripts be re-used to define a wide range of facial animation scenarios, but they can also be applied with appropriate paramete...
متن کاملAgents and Affect: Why Embodied Agents Need Affective Systems
This paper discusses why intelligent embodied agents – concentrating on the case of graphically-embodied agents – require affective systems. It discusses the risks involved in attempting to produce naturalistic expressive behaviour, and examines the specific case of facial expression generation. It considers the approach taken by the EU Framework 5 project VICTEC to facial expressions and then ...
متن کاملAffective Embodied Conversational Agents for Natural Interaction
Human computer intelligent interaction is an emerging field aimed at providing natural ways for humans to use computers as aids. It is argued that for a computer to be able to interact with humans it needs to have the communication skills of humans. One of these skills is the affective aspect of communication, which is recognized to be a crucial part of human intelligence and has been argued to...
متن کاملMPEG-4 Facial Expression Synthesis based on Appraisal Theory
MPEG-4 facial animation parameters are used in order to evaluate theoretical predictions for intermediate expressions of a given emotion episode, based on Scherer’s appraisal theory. MPEG-4 FAPs and action units are combined in modelling the effects of appraisal checks on facial expressions and temporal evolution issues of facial expressions are investigated. The results of the synthesis proces...
